Dogtopia fundraising event goes to the dogs

Americans are always ready to do whatever is necessary to support their troops fighting overseas. However, many of those same patriots are unaware of the contributions made by the four-legged dogs working alongside the soldiers.

While the canines may not be as heavily armed as the soldiers, they do their fair share of work and serve in many capacities. The official history of military working dogs stretches back to World War II. Since then, they have continued to be a vital part of military operations in times of peace and conflict.

Last Sunday, local people had helping military dogs in mind. Dogtopia of Manassas, along with several other Dogtopia locations nationwide, were host to K-9 Support's fourth annual Charity Dog Wash. The event is held to raise money in support of the canine teams working overseas.

The inspiration for this annual charity event came from a campaign to increase awareness about military dogs begun by the Dogtopia in Vienna, in 2005. From the success of the event came the start of K-9 Support. Since then, K-9 Support has managed to host this event on an annual basis at several Dogtopia locations across the nation.

Each location that participated selected a canine unit that their donation would benefit.

Proceeds will be used to purchase specific items desperately need. The items will be placed in care packages and sent to the handlers and the dogs of the selected units stationed overseas. A few of the items requested by the troops were cooling equipment and protective eyewear for the dogs and heat-resistant clothing for the handlers.

Brian Fitzpatrick and his wife Suzanne opened the Manassas Dogtopia in March 2008. The business venture came about as a result of not appreciating the boarding experiences they shared with their dog Casey. Now they have become part of the Dogtopia franchise and help dogs in this country and other countries as well.

"It's a privilege to host this event," said Suzanne. "People always know about the soldiers but they forget about the dogs."

Like the people at Dogtopia, local dog owners were excited about the charity event. Some of the people who attended the dog wash were regular Dogtopia customers and others who heard about the event visited the facility for the first time.

Dexter Torculas of Bristow noticed a flyer advertising the charity event and was eager to attend the dog wash and make a donation.

"I hope it helps the canine enforcement teams," said Torculas.

Not every dog enjoyed a dip in the tub but the owners knew their efforts and the dog's occasional discomfort being soaked and shampooed were going toward making a difference in lives of the military dogs stationed overseas. As a thank you for their participation, Dogtopia offered the happy dogs a bandanna to go along with their new shiny and clean coats.
