A Word from Amy

Hello and Happy Holidays!

The year has flown by, and what a year it has been! We opened our first Franchise in Houston, TX, and our second corporate store in White Flint, MD. Both stores are flourishing, and check back often as we expect to open four more franchise locations in the first quarter of next year.

We held another very successful Dog Wash over the summer, and to date, K-9 Support has raised well over $20,000! We recently shipped approximately 350 pounds of Holiday care packages overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan. A big Thank You to everyone who donated - we sent over some great stuff, guaranteed to make it a very Merry Christmas for the dogs and their handlers!

As we approach the very busy Holiday season, we are happy to announce that we now have a Groomer for our White Flint, MD location, and are scheduling grooming appointments so your dog can look beautiful for all of your guests! Tysons Corner continues to offer grooming, but we are getting booked very quickly - call now to make sure you can get in before Christmas.

From the whole staff here at Dogtopia®, we wish you and yours a very happy and safe Holiday Season!

Warmest Regards,

Amy Nichols
Founder and CEO

Halloween Contest Winner

Once again this year's costume contest was highly competitive. We had a number of creative entries and were thrilled at the response in just our 2nd year. We recorded hundreds of votes and when all were tallied we were ready to crown a new champion for 2006.

Taz the Wonder Bread Dog! Taz is a regular at our Tysons Corner, VA facility and is a proud member of Labrador Retriever Rescue. He'll receive 50 Doggie Dollars and the title of Halloween Grand Champion. Should he be unable to perform his duties as Grand Champion, our runner-up, Penelopea in the Pod will take his place. We'd also like to congratulate Dr. Chandler, who rounded out our top 3.

Thanks again to all our participants. Now let's get brainstorming on next year!

Indoor Winter Fun

Each Saturday we host an indoor dog park at our 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in North Bethesda, MD. The weather's gotten chilly, the dog park muddy and it's time to bring those dogs inside! With 100% climate-controlled rooms with padded rubber flooring, play equipment, and wide open space, your dog can run, play, and wrestle to their heart's content! The best part is you'll be there with them and have a chance to meet your dogs friends and their parents!

We have opened our doors to the public, so feel free to invite your friend and spread the word!

Saturdays 1:00pm-3:00pm $10/dog

Making the Holidays Fun For Everyone!

There's nothing worse than gathering your loved ones around the table only to look over at your dog and see the "What about me?" face. Here are a couple of tips to make that holiday dinner pleasant for everyone in attendance; including those with fur.

During dinner consider this...

  • Giving your dog a special new toy or a treat-filled Kong to help keep him occupied during the meal.
  • Some guests may not know that you don't want anyone to share food with the dog. Before serving, let everyone know they shouldn't share with anyone with more than 2 legs.
  • Keep a watchful eye on children who might want to feed the cute doggy anyway.
  • In case your dog decides to seek a treat elsewhere, make sure garbage and leftovers are safely disposed of right away. If you're serving turkey with bones be especially cautious.
  • If all else fails, you may want to consider putting your dog in a separate room with some toys and a soft place to lie. Once dinner's over they can happily rejoin the family.
  • Even though there may be lots of distractions always remember to give your dog all the ear scratches and chin rubs they're accustomed to.

Happy's Christmas Wishlist

  • Puppy Paw Stocking - The stockings are all hung with care, but did you remember the newest member of your family? If not, we've got it covered. A puppy sized Kong, perfect for constant chewing and batting and a plush chew toy are tucked in the paw shaped stocking.
  • Luxury Toys from Hautedoggity - You shouldn't be the only one in your house to receive something in a little, blue box. A Sniffany & Co chew toy may be the answer for even the most discriminating dog. Or perhaps a Chewy Vuitton or Jimmy Chew is the answer...
  • Cain & Able Pampering - This time of year is definitely fun, but it can also be a little stressful. Treat your best friend with a spa gift set from Cain & Able. Including shampoo, conditioner and finishing spritz they'll have everything they need to look beautiful in all those pictures!
  • Fresh treats from Barkley Square - With flavors like Bacon and Cheese, Ginger, Sweet Potato and Pumpkin... these treats are good enough for us to eat! There won't be a crumb left.

Ask Happy

What're you most thankful for this holiday season?
- Buddy B.

I have a lot to be grateful for this year, but here are a few things at the top of my list!

  • Fresh baked sugar cookies left a little too close to the table's edge
  • The first squeak from a new toy
  • Extra brushing (this time of year my coat's just a disaster)
  • Curling up by the fireplace now that winter is here
  • Endless belly rubs from visiting friends and family

One of the hottest new accessories for fall is our stylish, orange member tag. The simple bone design acts as a perfect balance between style and functionality. It not only looks good, but serves a very important purpose.

Recently one of our client's dogs became lost with only our tag as identification. A good Samaritan contacted us after finding him and we were able to pass along the owner's information.

Nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of your dog, so always ensure they have at least one form of identification on at all times. We are happy to offer our ID tags free of charge.

Breed in Brief

Keeshond

Origin: The Keeshond (pronounced "kayz-hond") was named after the 18th-century Dutch patriot, Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer, leader of the Dutch rebellion against the House of Orange. When the House of Orange returned to power, this wonderful breed almost disappeared, but luckily the breed continued as a guard on Dutch barges. The Keeshond was accepted for AKC registration in 1930. As a result of the breed's history and friendly disposition, Keeshonden are sometimes referred to as "The Smiling Dutchman".
Group: Non-Sporting
Life Span: 12-15 yrs
Color: Mixture of gray, black and cream.
Coat: Thick, multilayered.
Grooming: Boxers shed moderately; usually more in the fall and in spring. They do require regular brushing and nail trimming.
Height/Weight:
17 to 18 inches; 35 to 40 pounds.
Trainability: Above Average
Activity Level: Alert, High energy
Known Health Problems:
hip dysplasia, luxating patellas (trick knee), epilepsy
Overall Personality: They love children and are excellent family dogs, preferring to be close to their humans whenever possible. They generally get along with other dogs as well and will enjoy a good chase around the yard. Keeshonden are very intuitive and empathic and are often used as comfort dogs. Most notably, at least one Keeshond, Tikva, was at Ground Zero on 9/11 to help comfort the rescue workers.
